Aquilegia is a genus in the family Ranunculaceae. They are  hardy plants that prefer fairly moist soil and semi-shade. However, the genus includes a few alpine plants that need full sun and well drained soil.

A self-seeded hybrid between A. vulgaris 'Magpie' and A. x hybrida, most likely 'McKana's Giants'. The flower colour is exactly the same as 'Magpie' and the spurs are hooked, but the flowers are much larger, like A. x hybrida.
